Meet Steven Butler

My name is Steven Butler, commonly known as "The Big Friendly Therapist". I am a Licensed Counselling Therapist (LCT) with the College of Licensed Counselling Therapists of NB (CCTNB) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).
My passion lies with working closely with young adults and adults in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community - providing gender affirming care. I also am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is a structured therapy that encourages clients to work through their trauma by using bi-lateral stimulation. I use an integrative, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy, drawing from person-centred and humanistic frameworks, queer theory, and evidence-based modalities including CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, and affirmative therapy.
I work with folks who are wanting to work through anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, open relationships, life transitions, gender identity and sexual orientation exploration, and relationship struggles (I currently do not offer couples counselling). I work at being anti-racist, affirmative, all the while being non-judgemental.

I currently have a wait list for new clients. To be added to my wait list, please email me at stevenbutler@thebft.ca

Meet Hannah Watson

My name is Hannah Watson, and I am a Master of Social Work student with Memorial University of Newfoundland and a student intern with The Therapy Collective. I am a Registered Social Worker, in good standing with the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers. With an Honours Bachelor of Social Work degree and Social Service Worker diploma, I hold a strong foundation for clinical practice that is grounded in care, curiosity, compassion, and collaboration.
Therapy can be an intimidating space, which is why I love to emphasize that this is a non-judgemental, relational, and empowering atmosphere. We are both learning as we go; my clients, research, and my own lived experiences are my greatest guides. I deeply believe that clients are the experts in their own lives, so my role is not to "fix," but to support, witness, and gently explore what may be getting in the way of living the life you want to live. I am especially interested in moving beyond normative understandings of trauma and grief by bringing awareness to the mind-body connections and expanding curiosity for self-compassion. I approach counselling from a holistic and social-justice informed lens, recognizing that our wellbeing is deeply influenced by the relationships and systems that surround us. Healing happens in connection, and I wish to be that supportive environment for you!
While on practicum, I will be deepening my awareness of somatic and parts work therapies, commonly known as Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems along with mindfulness based interventions and narrative therapy. I hold training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Mindful Self-Compassion, informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and various grief certificates. My approach will be to meet you where you are on your journey of self-discovery and healing!

You can book a low-cost session with Hannah until August, 2026 here.
